Physical Education Course Descriptions
Each student must take Lifetime Wellness in addition to having a 1/2 credit of P.E.
Lifetime Wellness
Grade 9,10,11,12: one term: one credit/elective
This course focuses on principles of lifetime wellness not solely activity and sports. Students will be better prepared to assume responsibilities for personal lifetime wellness. This course will cover the following areas: personal fitness and related skills, nutrition, safety and first aid, sexuality and family life, disease prevention and control, mental health, and substance use/abuse.
Physical Education I
Grade 11; One term; Half credit; This course is taught on an alternating A/B day schedule with Personal Finance.
Physical Education is a holistic approach to health and physical education in Tennessee high schools. The course addresses the content areas of Nutrition, , First Aid and Safety, and Personal Fitness and Related Skills. Each content area is addressed in a classroom setting while allowing opportunity to explore how one content area affects and is affected by other content areas. Students participate in cooperative learning instructional methods and physical activities that can be practiced throughout a person's lifespan. Instruction should emphasize prevention as well as intervention with regard to the health practices of students. Enjoy learning new lifetime fitness activities that are health related and also recognize the relationship and importance of the five health related components of fitness to ones overall wellness. These skills can be used for lifetime recreational activities to maintain good physical fitness.
Physical Education II (Weight Training)
Grade 9,10,11,12: one term: one credit/elective
This course offers the beginning weight-training student an opportunity to train for a particular sport. Proper techniques on how to lift weights will be taught. Students will learn how lifting weights can benefit them both now and in later life. A weight training program will be provided for the student that will also include speed, agility and cardiovascular training.
